ARW files

I have a question. I have a sony a6600 and the imac with catalina10.15.5 and i can't see thumbnails of the raw files (ARW) before i could see it with my other camera Canon. It is very difficult to see the correct photo from a folder. I use Photoshop and I can see them in this program but not in my. folders. I have searched the internet but was able to find good solution except that everyone is talking about a bug and there will be some kind of update. can anyone help me further?

Here is the official list of cameras supported by Apples Camera RAW database and macOS Catalina.

Digital camera RAW formats supported by iOS 13, iPadOS 13 and macOS Catalina – Apple Support

Your Sony Alpha ILCE-6600 is included in the list.

I am running macOS Mojave and I can see the thumbnails from the Sony Alpha ILCE-6600

in the Finder, Preview,Quicklook and the Photos app.

I am going to switch over to macOS Catalina and will see if it is rendering the thumbnail previews.

Good day, I am indeed using a new Sony Alpha ILCE-6600, which displays RAW images in ARW 2.3 format. e camera. The photos I transfer via SD card and are stored locally in a new folder on my iMac, and then edited and saved in a folder on an external hard drive. In both folders I only see the filename and eg icon of the program with which I have indicated what I am editing with see attachment. In my other photos I see the images in the folder as small thumbnails. see Appendix. These photos were from my other camera e.g. Canon and Panasonic.

Hi, Daisym1.

Thank you for reaching out on the Apple Support Communities. It appears that you’re experiencing an issue where you aren’t able to see the thumbnails for the RAW images files that you’ve captured with your camera in Finder, but you are able to see them in Photoshop. If we understand correctly, the camera you’re using now is the Sony Alpha ILCE-6600 which renders RAW images in an ARW 2.3 format.

How are you storing the files? For example, are they modified or transferred to your Mac using any third-party software? Are they stored locally on your iMac, in iCloud, or on an external storage device? Approximately how large is the folder where you have the RAW images stored?

If you create a new folder on your Desktop and move just a coupe of the images into that folder, are you able to see the thumbnails? This will let us know if the issue with not being able to see thumbnails for these files in Finder is related to how long it is taking your iMac to render a thumbnail preview for the images in either a folder accessed off your iMac or with a large number of files.

Cheers.

So I have just dropped by Catalina and no the thumbnails will not render in Catalina.

I don't think Apple will do anything to solve it

they will be too busy with the next OS Big Sur.

Just like they never got round to fixing creating custom folder file icons

without doing various workarounds like having to conform to certain aspect ratios

and pixel dimensions, when in older OS's it was as straight forward as choosing the

image you wanted and copying it over and the OS would do the work for you.

As you are using Photoshop then you could download Adobes DNG converter it is free,

this will convert your Sonys or any other supported cameras to the .dng (digital negative)

file system and the thumbnails will definitely render in Catalina.
