MAC OSX Mavericks / 10.9.5 to MAC OSX Catalina Update

Hi good folks,

My MacBook Pro is (13-inch, Mid 2012) Model Identifier: MacBookPro9,2 and it runs OSX Mavericks, and whenever I try to update this to OSX Catalina it says - You may not install to this volume because the computer is missing a firmware partition. NB: I am installing this on an USB Stick to run on my computer, my hard drive has some issue which I can't fix or get changed amidst this Covid-19 crisis.

How can I solve this?

I know for sure that my laptop is compatible for upgrade to OSX Catalina.

I would try upgrading to El Capitan first.
