i'm trying to change my apple id email address but after signing in to appleid.apple.com and clicking "change apple id," it comes up with the error message: this email address is not available. choose a different address.
this is my personal gmail address so i don't know why it's not letting me add it?
Note that you can't reuse an email address that was previously been associated with an Apple ID in any way (e.g., a reachable at email address) until an uncertain period has passed--sometimes reputed to 30 day and sometimes 1 year. Also, I have seen that you never can use such an email address again. The last two times I saw someone claim a time period it was “up to 30 days.” I believe that up to 30 days is the current answer. But, you can contact Apple support to check out the currently quoted wait period.

Ask to speak with Apple Store Staff, and ask about your Apple ID. See if this eMail address has ever been used. They will know if that is the case.

If you are talking about the address you log in with, and if this address ends with @icoud.com (or @me.com or @mac.com) it cannpt be changed.
It can only be changed if it's a non-Apple address, nit not to any address which is associated with an Apple ID, or has been within the last 30 days.
