Gifting a book across borders?

I gifted a book across to someone in another country. The book store didn't ask to verify anything it just charged me for the book. But now the receiver tells me he can't read it because it's gifted from another country. Ironically the book is published in the country I'm gifting it to and in that same language.

It's hard to imagine why Apple would set up a barrier for this? I suppose I can get a refund, but isn't the whole concept here that it's supposed to be easy to buy or gift a book anywhere? Very surprised about this. Is there a workaround I'm not aware of?

Apple gave me the opportunity to gift the book to myself instead. Amazing how publishers prevent people from other countries to buy a US book and gift it to someone in the US. This is not just a normal silly business decision. This is stupidity on a much larger scale. We're talking demolishing ones own news stand in an attempt to gain market share. We haven't seen this level of ignorance since Xerox sold the mouse and graphical GUI to Apple.
