Apple Watch: ECG In Australia

Ok, it’s now 04 July 2020.

So, when will ECG be released in Australia.

I upgraded my Apple Watch specifically to get ECG, promised by Apple at that time.

Who is responsible in the Medical profession here for this absurd level of procrastination, please tell me...

Given the registration hasn't occurred the issue is hardly solved!

Interesting that Apple doesn't seem to be able to negotiate the relatively easy TGA registration process, especially since there exists what is known as a Global Medical Device Nomenclature code (recognised by the TGA) that covers the hardware and another that covers the software! Would hate to think it is just laziness on Apple's part or that they won't provide any details to TGA, which to be frank is usually less than the US and the same as the UK and EU.

For information, the relevant codes are below. Registration takes less than a day to complete the form and usually an answer is received within a couple of days.

Hardware

Name

Wearable multiple physiological parameter recorder

Definition

An electrically-powered, wearable device (e.g., wristband, watch, finger probe, head-worn sensor) designed to continuously or intermittently measure and record multiple physiological parameters [e.g., heart rate, respiration rate, electrocardiograph, haemoglobin oxygen saturation (Sp02), routine body movement] using one or more technologies [e.g., photoplethysmography (PPG), reflectance pulse oximetry, electrocardiography, accelerometry). The data is typically transferred to a local application (e.g., smartphone) or central database for analysis, which might include evaluation of lifestyle factors (e.g., energy expenditure, activity level, sleep patterns).

Software

Name

Smartphone camera home cardiovascular monitoring application software

Definition

A software program designed for use in a smartphone/watch with a built-in camera to periodically measure, via transcutaneous optical reading, and display cardiovascular parameters (e.g., pulse wave, heart rate variability, SpO2, blood pressure, LVEDP) for assessment of cardiovascular function to assist diagnosis of disease (e.g., arrythmia, cardiac autonomic neuropathy); it may also be used to provide general lifestyle/fitness advice or during a controlled Valsalva manoeuvre to facilitate cardioversion of supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). This is a home-use device which may allow for remote communication of data with a clinician; it may in addition be used in a clinical setting.

Hello newbie! Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! Please feel welcome & comfortable posting here.

I'm the unofficial welcome wagon young master for this honey pot about ECG downunder.

What if Apple knows that it doesn't have the research required for a medical device to be approved for the TGA under its stringent requirements for approval? Should Apple apply anyway just to please the handful of Aussies posting here?

What if?

If that is the case then should not Apple prominently state that in their Australian advertising and also instruct their Apple Store staff to inform customers?

I realise this forum is not one which Apple takes part in, but the company must be aware of what is on it yet chooses to turn a blind eye to it - and will not respond to questions from the media.

Inexplicable behaviour?

Now, now Daveed!

My age has nothing to do with it - you were simply unclear about what your response was relevant to.

Ok.

In the 36 years that you’ve been an Apple user you have no knowledge of Apple doing anything other than turn a blind eye to customer issues and not respond to the media.

You have assumed that I believe I have been misled by an Apple Australian employee. I have never said that. In fact, I made it quite clear that I had bought the Apple Watch knowing that the heart function was not yet approved in Australia. But, I was prepared to wait based on the Apple COO stating that applications were underway in all countries.

Do you have a position on the main thrust of my previous post?

Daveed,

You have quite a reputation as an helpful tech wiz.

I wish you well.

You’re right in his statement he did not say “applications”.

Just for the record...

On Jan 17, 2019 I bought and Apple Watch for the ECG function so as to help me monitor my AFIB. I knew ECG was not active in Australia when I bought the watch but at 2018 Special Event the Apple COO had said Apple was  "working hard to bring to customers around the world."

Whatever.

I did not post on this forum to try and “pressure” Apple - I posted to ask for help on where to go to find out when Apple expected Australian approval.

Full Stop.

Then why continue to contribute? You’ve actually been quite derogatory in your commentary about the people who are posting here while also stating that you’ve tried to unsubscribe from this thread. Why stoke the fire by posting more? You say you post here now as a form of entertainment; is it fun to make fun of people and their age and opinions? If so, you have no business being here. You level of “helpfulness” on the Apple forums, and the length of time you’ve used it do not give you the right to be disrespectful with regards to people’s age, or opinions about Apple’s perceived lack of action. You may not be employed by Apple, but you represent them in some small way when you post on here and you agree to be respectful to others while using these forums, and you haven’t been.

It seems that people aren't willing to read 16 pages of forums. This is quite frustrating as you know that people keep asking over and over why ECG is not available to Australia. In fact, all of us, deggie, Dahveed, Idris, have tried to get this point across multiple replies that have said the same thing. The other option for us is to just drop this thread all together, leading to it trailing the thread going into false interpretation and terrible answers (Example - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251818267). Now, we don't want that to happen, do we now. I agree that Dahveed's reply may have not been as aesthetically pleasing as his first answer but please note that we are trying hard to point y'all in the correct direction and your criticism of what apple should and shouldn't do is completely useless in these forums.

No, you are mistaken. I have pointed out your breach of the standards of respect set for this forum. I was not disrespectful in doing so. If I was disrespectful and levelled personal insults as you have done to others, then you could say I made derogatory comments.

All of you have a choice here. Yes, people are making new comments without reading previous pages of this thread. That is their error and prerogative, and it is probably due in part to the post that is marked as the “answer” to the initial question for this thread, and the fact they disagree with that statement as a “solution” or “answer”.

You StanleyG. and others make the choice to get annoyed and frustrated by the new Apple Communities members adding their comments to this post and not reading the 16 off pages of commentary. You make the choice to continually monitor it when you could easily delete the notification emails or unsubscribe from notifications for this thread and let it fizzle out. Don’t blame others for your frustration. Dah•veed and others have taken this a Step further by making the conscious choice to be passive aggressive and disrespectful to people. To label that behaviour as aesthetically displeasing misses the point; it’s not that it looks bad, it is bad practice that has no place here.
