Ringer volume low but text alert tones loud. Why?

I have the Xs phone - turned down the volume to the ringer using the button on the left. It wasn't muted but I guess on "level one" - however, when I got a text, the sound came through loud. Is this normal or how can I adjust this? Was I wrong in assuming the ringer volume affects the alert tone volume too? Thanks.

Hello Christine,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

It sounds like the volume for you iPhone ringer volume is different from the text notifications. This sounds like a setting difference between the phone ringer and text notifications. You can take a look at the following support articles to set the volumes of the different notifications.

Adjust the volume on iPhone - Apple Support

Best regards.

This is correct because those volumes are different and adjusting one has no effect on the other. The volume of notifications will follow your system volume, whereas phone calls have their own volume, which can only be adjusted while on an active phone call. So if you just need to adjust it, dial your own phone number as if you're attempting to check your voicemail, then use the volume button to raise the volume. When it's raised to your liking, you can end the call and the volume for calls should stay at this level until you adjust it again.
