I would like to use the apple watch specifically for it's GPS/Find my friends. I was wondering if I could buy the apple watch with cellular and get rid of the iphone. Do i need to have an iphone connected for the watch to work?

You don't necessarily have to carry the phone with you at all times (some functionality is limited when the phone is not within contact range), but you need an iPhone to use the watch. The watch is not a standalone device.
