Missing Firmware Partition - Updating to Catalina

Hello all,

I am currently running an MBP with macOS 10.11.6 (El Capitan) but am looking to update my software to the most recent Catalina. I have downloaded the Catalina update through the Mac App Store application, but I get the an error stating I can't update Catalina on my current Internal SSD because "...the computer is missing a firmware partition".

Does anyone know what the problem is or how I can fix this? I have attached screenshots from the Catalina updater as well as updates from Disk Utility.

Thank you!

Hey there CenBooke,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We understand you’re having issues updating to macOS Catalina due to an issue with a firmware partition missing. We’ll be happy to help with this.

Boot into recovery mode on your Mac and run First Aid on Macintosh HD using the steps here:

Repair a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac

After that, try updating once more. If you get the same issue, try updating to macOS High Sierra:

How to upgrade to macOS High Sierra

If you still have issues, boot into safe mode and try updating to macOS High Sierra from there:

How to use safe mode on your Mac

If that works, then try updating to macOS Catalina from macOS High Sierra:

We hope this helps.

Take care.
