How do align video clips with music in iMovie?

So iMovie's linear editing makes it almost impossible to sync video and music together. If you modify the length of an earlier video clip it will unsync the later clips from the music. So once and for all, is it possible to lock the video clips in time or to certain music parts?

Yes. Hold down the Option and Command keys and then click on the audio clip in the time line. Wherever you click it will move the attachment point to the video clip above it at the point where you clicked. Then when you change the length of video clips ahead of the attachment point it will not change the sync of the audio to the video after the attachment point. The video will stay locked where you set the attachment point.
