GPU not compatible with Photoshop 2020 rendering

Hi, having trouble with rendering video in Photoshop 2020. The latest photoshop version on my iMac 27" end of 2019 and also Catalina the latest version.

After uninstalling and trying al the work-arounds Adobe says my CPU is not compatible.

So now they send me to Apple support.

I've seen it is not possible to change my CPU.

Has anybody else has this problem and a work-around?

Your GPU passed the test. It does meet the minimum requirements that Adobe has for GPU’s which is noted in the article that was linked to in your post,

“What are the minimum graphics processor and display requirements?

  • 1024 x 768 display (1280 x 800 recommended) with 16-bit color and 512 MB of VRAM (2 GB or greater of VRAM is recommended)
  • To use OpenGL acceleration, your system must support OpenGL v2.0 and Shader Model 3.0 or later
  • To use OpenCL acceleration, your system must support OpenCL v1.1 or later”

Your GPU is at OpenCL v1.2 The system report would have noted that your GPU failed if it did not meet minimum specs, or the drivers were too old.

Do you have the graphics card enabled in Adobe Photoshop Preferences>Performance?

How do I use the Performance preferences for the graphics processor in Photoshop?

  1. Choose Edit > Preferences > Performance (Windows®) or Photoshop > Preferences > Performance (macOS).
  2. In the Performance panel, make sure that Use Graphics Processor is selected in the Graphics Processor Settings section.
  3. Click Advanced Settings and specify the following options:
  4. Drawing Mode:
    • Basic: Uses the least amount of graphics card memory (VRAM) and enables basic graphics processor features
    • Normal: Uses more graphics card memory (VRAM) and enables graphics processor-based color matching, tone mapping, and checkerboard blending
    • Advanced: Provides the benefits of Normal mode and newer graphics processor advances that can result in improved performance
  1. Use Graphics Processor to Accelerate Computation: Enable to improve the interactivity of Warp and Puppet Warp previews
  2. Use OpenCL: Enable to accelerate the new Blur Gallery filters, Smart Sharpen, Select Focus Area, or Image Size with Preserve Details selected (Note: OpenCL is available only on newer graphics cards that support OpenCL v1.1 or later.)

Photoshop runs a short test at startup of the App to test compatibility and disable the graphics card if necessary. Apple puts the GPU drivers in the OS, so it’s very important to be using the latest version of Catalina. Under the Help menu in Photoshop there is an option for System Report. Can you please run the report please and copy and paste the results here for me to read? Here is a link to help,

So, this tells us the graphics card is supported and the Adobe Customer Support Person was misunderstood or he/she spoke in error. If the GPU had failed the startup test, these would be grayed out.

So, going from the graphics card to what else can cause your rendering issue is available space on hard drive, available space on scratch disk, available memory etc. Can you confirm available ram, scratch disk size and type/speed and main SSD size and available space?

Jul 9, 2020 9:32 AM in response to Bernadette Boon

Thank you! Photoshop is allowed to use up to 70% but do you have other applications/programs open in the background while you’re trying to render video? If so, that reduces all available Ram and could be an issue. Make sure nothing else is open when using PS and rendering video.

Your internal drive is good! No worries here.

Are you using a separate disk for the scratch disk, or are you using the same internal SSD that the Operating System is on?

Thank you. I've seen the list. But I've been looking to solve the problem since the end of December.

I've never found anything that indicated it was my GPU.

And today I've been chatting with adobe support for at least 1 hour, uninstalling, restarting, cleaner and so on, and only after 1 hour the guy asked me, what kind of GPU I have.

Maybe this should be the first question. Because if this is really the problem, iMac user wil never be able to use this functionality...

Thanks Jeff,

The problem is when rendering video it stays "Initializing........". It does not render at all.

I used to show my before and after images with the transition (opacity). That was possible with my 2011 iMac with the iOS before Catalina (I could not upgrade anymore) and with an 2019 photoshop version. I bought a new iMac 20" the end of december and it never worked.

So on and off I've been searching for an answer. Yesterday I thought to contact Adobe, so I had a chat. They made me un install, clean up and so on. But it still did not work. So at the and he told my GPU is not compatible...

They never mentioned something like a graphics card startup test.

Apple and Adobe are pointing to each other.

Unfortunately now that Adobe has a very large PC/Windows

base compared to Apple, we are lower on the support list.

It seems Adobe has forgotten that it was Apple platform

back in the MC680x0 days that made their Photoshop 1.0

a resounding success and allowed them to grow into what they are today.
