Tell her to use Apple's iForgot service, or contact their Account Security team, or the iPhone’s original owner to supply Apple with its purchase receipt and ask them to remove the lock.

Thanks for your reply! We purchased the phone new from Sprint, but we no longer have Sprint service. Do you suppose they would send a receipt?
Ask them. You'd need to do this to get it anyway.
