iPhone Xr won't sync with MacBook Air

I'm trying to transfer music from a MacBook Air to an iPhone Xr. When I attach cable to iPhone & MacBook Air, I do not see the iPhone as a device to sync with, and the iPhone flashes. Is there some setting on the iPhone that could disable sync?
