What would be the best purchase for a Pre-Health/Med School student?

I am currently a Junior in college and I am a Biology major/Chemistry minor. I have an older Windows laptop (Dell Inspiron 2017 15 5000) which is beginning experience slow loading speeds and experiencing difficulty loading documents. It has become a hindrance in my schoolwork where I have to wait for several minutes for a simple Word document to load.

I've decided to make the switch to Apple computers because my girlfriend and the rest of my family who use MacBooks and have told me that they are great to have for school because the have a longer battery life, faster load speeds, and better displays than my current laptop. I also have decided to make the switch because of the amazing ecosystem between all of their devices, connecting my iPhone 8 Plus, Apple Watch Series 3, and 1st Generation Airpods seamlessly. I find that these are the two main reasons that I plan to purchase an Apple computer.

As much as I would like to have a MacBook Air, I am afraid that I may not have the money to purchase one before the school year begins. As a result, I began to research iPads, where I have noticed that they are becoming more capable of becoming a suitable replacement for a laptop. My girlfriend also uses an iPad to take notes on for classes and she tells me that it is the best way to take notes in college, which has made me think of the versatility of using an iPad for my schoolwork.

As I conducted my research, I discovered the "Back to School" promotion that Apple does every summer before the school year begins, so this will knock off $100 from Macbooks and iPads and will grant you a pair of discounted Airpods with your purchase. As a "broke college student", I try to take advantage of these types of deals.

So, my question is: "What is the best Apple purchase for a Pre-Health student?"

I am looking for a "budget" Apple product to serve as my daily driver laptop for the next 4-6 years as I finish my education. I plan to spend no more than $1,400 on my purchase. I feel like I should reiterate that I am a Biology major on the Pre-Med/Pre-Dent track.

Below are three options that my father, my girlfriend, and I came up with for my next computer purchase. Feel free to leave your own recommendations as well (I am open to all suggestions).

My first option is the 2020 MacBook Air with the 1.1 GHz quad-core 10th Generation Intel Core i5 processor with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of base storage (and obviously Apple Care). This would come with Airpods Pro for an additional $90, with a total of $1,394.26.

My second option is the Space Grey 2020 iPad Pro with 256GB of base storage and only Wi-Fi (again with Apple Care), the 2nd Generation Apple Pencil, the Smart Keyboard for the iPad Pro, and the Airpods Pro, for a total of $1,428.90.

My third option (the cheapest) is to go with the 10.5 inch Space Grey iPad Air (Wi-Fi only, 256GB storage) and with Apple Care, as well as the 1st Generation Apple Pencil, the Smart Keyboard for the iPad (7th generation) and iPad Air (3rd Generation), and the Airpods Pro for a total of $1,095.49.

Thank you for your help!

Honestly, if you want a decently performing Mac, that budget is a little too small. There are very decent Dell and HP business laptops that remedy the problems you have with your Inspiron, but even then, $1400 is still mid-range at best. Windows PCs can be inexpensive, but that doesn't mean that the inexpensive products are worth getting.

As for whether or not an iPad could suffice really boils down to software and whether or not the iPad would be sufficient. The experience of using Word on an iPad is not the same as using it on a PC or Mac, for instance. If you're looking to replace a whole laptop, then I wouldn't get anything other than a 12.9" iPad (as typing on anything smaller isn't the most comfortable experience unless you're a master thumb typist on an iPad mini).

If you want to get a Mac, my advice would be to get the base model four-port 13" MacBook Pro at the minimum. Do NOT get the MacBook Air. If that isn't doable, then at least get the higher-end model of two-port 13" MacBook Pro (and ensure that you have at least 16GB of Memory). The difference between the two-port 13" MacBook Pro and the four-port 13" MacBook Pro is so stark that they might as well be entirely different products.

I'd tell you to get a refurbished Mac from the Apple Certified Refurbished Mac section of the Apple Online Store, alas, the 2020 13" MacBook Pros are still a little too new to be appearing there and I wouldn't recommend you getting any Mac with the butterfly keyboards.

Sorry I don't have a recommendation that fits comfortably within your budget!
