Safe, yes if you download it from a legitimate source such as https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge
Valuable addition? That is a personal preference. Not for me but might be for you.
Edge is just another browser, like Safari or Chrome or Firefox. Which one(s) you use is largely a matter of personal preference.
Advertising works, eh?
Local rule of thumb, around web advertising and pop-ups: if I didn’t go looking for it, I don’t want it installed.
I’d expect that Microsoft telemetry will collect all sorts of data on your web activities.
There are some previous discussions:

It may be necessary for Microsoft to promote it but it isn't necessary to have. You can use any browser that you prefer.
Thank you for such a quick and concise reply! The ad to install it keeps popping up on my MSN home screen (so I guess that's a legit source), like I NEED to install it. Here's my other question, I guess the crux of it all: What does the software provide that makes it seem so necessary to have?
THANK YOU SO MUCH for the insight!!!
AWESOME point!!! Happy with what I have. If it ain't broke...THANK YOU as well for the perspective and insight!
Glad it helped. I'm inclined to agree with FoxFifth on this. I've tried it on my work computer (Windows) and absolutely hate it.
