A vertical stripe appearing on the right side of some photos

Hi!

I'm using Photos and iCloud Photos Library for my photos storage.

Recently I took some photos using my camera (JPEGs), imported them and something weird is going on with a few: a small part of the image is moved from left side to the right side creating a vertical stripe:

(Screenshot from Photos - not showing full photo for privacy reasons)

The stripe is not visible on the thumbnail and also is not visible at first, it shows shortly after the corrupted photo is opened - you can see the video in my reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/applehelp/comments/ho7qzk/weirdest_photospreviewjpeg_bug_vertical_stripe/

Some more facts:

  • photo is not edited though as far as I recall it was and then restored to its initial state
  • photo when exported from Photos has the stripe when opened in Preview
  • exported original for this photo also has the stripe when opened in Preview
  • when I sent the exported original to myself using iMessage it doesn't have the stripe in thumbnail, has the stripe when fully opened on the computer but DOES NOT have the stripe when opened on the iPhone or my other Mac!
  • on this other Mac in Photos app also everything is fine
  • on iPhone's Photos also everything is fine
  • when I try to edit (like change exposure) this photo on the "faulty" Mac all the devices see edited version with the stripe
  • when I try to edit this photo on other devices then faulty Mac sees correctly edited photo (without the stripe); although if I restore to original the stripe is back

Do you have any ideas? I'm starting to worry about my photos in iCloud :(

It looks like a JPEG corruption. See: Corrupted Originals, the Insidious Danger - How to Protect our Photo Libraries - Apple Community

JPEG image files can easily get corrupted when transmitted between devices, imported using a damaged card reader or cable, or stored on a failing disk with bad blocks. A few flipped bits may suffice to corrupt a JPEG. The big problem is, that we may only notice the corruption when it is too late. Photos is showing us the previews and thumbnails, which will look fine and and keep the damaged originals hidden. Only when we try to edit the originals we will suddenly see the damage.

Try to save the image files on the device, where you can still see the image without the damage. Save it in a way, that will create a new file, for example, by exporting the edited version as a TIFF, not a JPEG.

You may also want to check the camera card where you imported the images from. Are you still seeing the stripes, when you are importing the images again? Try to import them to a second library, that is not syncing with iCloud.

Run a hardware check on all volumes and devices, where you are storing your Photos Library:

How to use Apple Diagnostics on your Mac – Apple Support

the last time, I had several damaged originals at once, I had to replace the Memory of the Mac. One of the modules had a problem. And before that, the internal system drive has been failing. As it is more than one picture that is showing artefacts, it is a good time to check your hardware thoroughly.
