Hello. I live on the East Coast and want to troubleshoot a friend's computer on the West Coast. Can someone tell me what to do on each end? I imagine West Coast must create a user account for me with all access rights? Would she need my short name? How would I login on her computer?

What iMac is involved? Is yours also an Apple computer or it is running Windows? The pre-2006 iMacs this forum section covers cannot run Messages and may require different procedures than newer iMacs.
I would try using: Share screens using Messages on Mac - Apple Support
