Onedrive in Files app not showing folders with more than 50 items.

Hi,

I have an issue with using Onedrive in the files app. Onedrive won’t show any folder with more than 50 items and I get a ‘content not available’ message. If I click ‘try again’ I briefly see the contents and then the contents not available message shows again. I have troubleshooted it to knowing it’s 50 files as if I jump onto a windows PC and remove files to other folders I can display them once it gets to 49 files.

If I delete the onedrive app then obviously I can’t see it in files. If I then install the onedrive app but not open it it seems to work for a while. As soon as I open the onedrive once it then wont work at all.

This is affecting my iPad Pro 10.5, my iPhone 11 and my iPad mini 5. They are all up to date. All apps are up to date. I have even set all devices up as new devices (not using a previous back and up and restore) and the same thing happens. Seeing that it is happening across all devices it must be an issue with the Files app and Onedrive. I am at a lost what to do. It also seems to affect global search as no files in onedrive (i.e. if I use search in files app or in other apps like documents by readdle show any search results at all). Documents by readdle can show all the OneDrive folders fine, and the OneDrive app itself can show all folders fine.

I have found that if I change the file arrangement settings from "Kind" to "Name" that I can at least see all files within their folders - even if I now have to scroll and pass down through lots of individual files to get to folders within which I want to work.

Well after my hopes were raised by interaction with the OneDrive support team including sending them screen videos, they were dashed this morning.

Hope you are doing good!

As we're from OneDrive consumer support team, we do not have expertise on the issue you are facing with Files App(iOS).

Kindly contact Apple support to get the Files App issues addressed.

So as predicted this is a typical pass the buck situation! At least I got a repost se from Microsoft where as Apple is protected from us by curtain walls of “forums”!!

Here is my reply to last email from MS....

Dear Manish,

First I would not expect a frontline service to be able to go into the code and find out the problem but I would expect them to have a meaningful discussion with the team leaders who do...it is pretty obvious that this is a relatively simple software issue related to how he OneDrive app interacts with the Files app.

This is not to you personally but the type of company you work for. I am happy that Microsoft and Apple live up to my expectations (extremely low) when it comes to this type of issue. If you were my children I would knock your heads together and tell you to fix it together. Sorry to say that I fully expected this pathetic response as you can read from my initial contact...

  • s. I have to conclude this is a Microsoft app problem and not directly related to Apple so please fix ASAP. It will be incredibly irritating to get a “it’s the other people” type response.

The world can not progress with people not reaching out to the enemy and obviously that applies to the commercial world as much as he social and political one.

Do at least have the grace to pass this message to higher levels.

I do not underestimate the complexity of software across many platforms but I find all these so called user forums a complete waste of time ,in a way they are a mechanism for companies like Microsoft and Apple and all the other “consumer” products companies to shirk full responsibility and pretend they have satisfied customers.

So to summarise, disappointing but expected outcome.

I will forward this to Apple and user forums On which I have threads relating to this.

At least I can rely on using DropBox more for the foreseeable future.

Finally someone else experiencing this! It’s been driving me crazy as it breaks universal search for me. I did find an old iPad mini I had on iOS 12.x (can’t recall which version) but that also had the same problem. I’m in the process of looking at other cloud storage options. I’ve noticed that with google drive there is no markup facility in files app and iCloud Drive doesn’t seem to work well with Readdle documents (can’t seem to get favourites working properly). I’ve been with one drive for about 5 years so this has really interrupted my workflow. Apple says it’s a onedrive problem and Microsoft says it’s an Apple problem (since the onedrive app works fine). I’ve even updated to iPadOS 14 public beta and that hasn’t fixed anything. Unusually I am at a loss in what to do.

I am facing the same issue. I have one camera folder (that syncs with my android phone) that has 32000 photos... and now I am facing exactly the same issue. I downloaded everything (offline mode) but still not working.

iCloud doesn’t work for me because I cant “offload” files from my device, so I’ve got an iPad 2020 1TB to solve the space problem, but now OneDrive is not working.

I was really enjoying my iPad, but as a professional photographer I need a professional device and storage (in and out) from iPad as today is really cumbersome (you can do it... but takes extra time).

I think the device is amazing, until you need to copy/move larger files in our out of the device. So my iPad2020 12.9 1TB now is just a very expensive Lightroom tablet (since everything in on Adobe cloud 50K pictures) I can work with the device.

I’ve bought it because I’d like to have everything on my device.

Please Apple fix:

  • A way to know if the files are being copied or not
  • Faster in/out from the device (USB C) better drivers, I don’t know
  • Onedrive interaction or better iCloud (offload).

I am not going back to PC, but we still have some fix to go :(

I see! Yeah your workaround works, thanks! But there’s small caveat:

  • Right now I have a OneDrive favourite Folder with more than 50 folders inside. My default list view is by Date (since I like to access the most recently worked folder from the top). If I just began a new session with Files app (not previously opened) and clicked my favourite folder, it will show the error “Content Unavailable...unknown error”
  • If I jump to another random folder, change the list view by any other types (e.g. Kind, Tags, Size) except Name, then jump to my favourite folder, the same error occurs.
  • If I jump to another random folder, change the list view to “Name”, jump back to my favourite folder, now it works!
  • If I’m in the favourite folder, and change the list view back to “Date”, it works! In fact, if I don’t exit (i.e. swipe up the Files App from multitasking), or as long you don’t jump to another account or any other favourites folder, and only navigate within your big folder, e.g. use the go back to upper folder, the Folder view with any list type view works, and you can perfectly see the content of the folders.

So in short, only works in “Name” view, and kind of works with any other... but I guess that’s better than having nothing at all!
