Iphone SE IOS upgrade from 9.3.2 to 13.5

Does anyone have tips or advice on how to perform a successful IOS upgrade for iphone SE (1st Gen) from version 9.3.2 (as was purchased years back) to current version 13.5? Is it possible to do sequential updates or will i have to do one big upgrade? After i had issues with my old iphone 4 and 4S previously with IOS upgrades, i have been avoiding the upgrades for the SE but most of the apps are now requesting for updates and i seem to be backed into a corner.
