Dock not showing on left/right side of external monitor

First off, I have my external screen setup above my MacBook screen. When I set up the dock to show on the bottom of the screen, it does shows on the external screen when I move the cursor to the bottom of the external screen where my MacBook screen is not (if that makes sense, MacBook screen is smaller than external). However the dock disappears when I try to actually click on an icon. Because of this I tried to move the dock to the left of the screen but then it won't show up at all on the external screen. Same happens if I try to move the dock to the right side. The dock also doesn't show up on the ext screen if I turn off auto hide.

I selected 'displays have separate spaces' and dock hiding and the behavior is as you described - except it appears to work properly on my machine. At the bottom of the external display if I hover the mouse to the left or right I get the dock to appear (although it is a little finicky about it) and I can click on it. If I hover near the center, nothing happens.

So something peculiar to your machine is probably in play. Standard things to check include:

Does this occur for a different user, e.g., Guest? How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac.

Does this occur after starting up in Safe Mode?

Consider the possibility of a third party software conflict.  EtreCheck can be used to investigate what is installed.  You can post the report here. Someone might spot something.

Thank you for your reply. The dock does show up on both, Mac and external display. Let me try to clarify: My 12" MacBook screen is centered below my 21" external screen so that the 21" screen 'overhangs' on both, left and right side' of my MacBook screen(I have attached a picture). If I move the mouse cursor to the bottom of either right or left side of my external screen, the dock shows up on said screen. I have also attached a screenshot of my configuration.

Yes, 'displays have separate spaces' is turned on.

If I move the mouse cursor down from my external screen in an area that's 'covered' by my MacBook screen (like in the middle), the cursor moves to my MacBook screen. If I move it down on the outer left/right edges on my external screen that are not covered by my MacBook screen, the cursor stops at the bottom and then the dock comes up.

The Dock should not appear on a side that is shared with another display as it appears in the Arrangement tab of Display System Preferences.

I'm not sure I quite understand what you are describing, so I could only offer what is supposed to work.

If you have one display above the other, the Dock will not appear on the top display.

If you have them side-by-side, you can only show the Dock on the outer edges of either display.

I guess I still down't know what you are describing.

In Mission Control System Preferences, do you have "Displays have separate spaces" selected?

As I stated, with your displays set up like that, the Dock should not show up on the bottom edge of your upper monitor if you have it set to Bottom. It should only show up on the lower display at the bottom.

If you have it set to left or right, I think it will show up on either.

Thank you for verifying that what I'm seeing on my Mac can actually happen on other Mac's. We got a little side tracked trying to prove that I'm seeing the dock on the bottom of my external screen. However my original issue is that I'm unable to move the dock to the left or right side of my external screen.
