quicktime crash

At some stage after an update or something, I can no longer do screen recordings using Quicktime on my iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2017). Sometimes it completes the recording but it doesn't get saved anywhere, just goes back to Quicktime like nothing happened. Most other times it causes a fatal immediate shutdown of the computer.

I tested it with another user account and found it had the same problem.

I didn't try safe mode however I did find another solution to successfully make a screen recording using Terminal. Enter the following command:

screencapture -v out.mov

It records the whole screen to a file called "out.mov" in the home folder. It continues until the <ctrl> + c keys are pressed.

Apparently this is a new feature since Catalina. I found the info at this article but you have to read the most recent comment, not the accepted answer: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/230983/how-do-you-do-command-line-video-screen-capture-on-os-x-with-libav?answertab=oldest#tab-top

Hello davidhmorgan and welcome to Apple Support Communities.

It appears you are having an issue involving QuickTime Player and screen recordings

First, make sure you are using QuickTime Player and not an older version that might still be on the Mac from an older macOS installation.

Next, there are a couple of steps you can take to help isolate what is causing this.

1) Start by doing a safe boot of the Mac. This will clear some cache files, turn off some system extensions and log-in items and give you a good foundation. After doing the safe boot, reboot normally and test.

How to use safe mode on your Mac

2) If the issue persists after a safe boot, set up a test user account in order to isolate the issue to the system or the user data and ultimately resolve it.

Cheers.
