Assistance requested: Many iMac/Catalina problems:

[This post based on another: "False 'disk full' message in Catalina"]

I am having many problems which I associate with Catalina because I've only had them since the upgrade (I was a Mainframe/PC/Mac developer. Have been a happy Mac user since about 1986 and a Mac and Multimedia developer off and on. )

Background:

I have had Avast installed recently - now uninstalled.

I recently reset Firefox after a number of problems - some described below, but these continued.

In FF I couldn't get the Reply button here in Discussions to respond despite the 'Hand' cursor. Similar has occurred elsewhere with FF.

Moving to Safari, I had to re-enter ID log/pw despite 'remember me' being ticked from last time.

Firefox wouldn't load HTTPS sites - security: 'Can't verify' etc... Starting a VPN as a different Country sometimes helped.

Resizing 10 images in Graphicconverter resulted in no files in the output folder.

Doing the same in Preview didn't work: either 'Draft save failed' and 'can't save file' and/or zero sized output files. I resized individually and they worked.

"Disk full' message when trying to copy files to Applications or to download files in Firefox.

Spontaneous reboots after sudden black screen occur at various times, without apparent cause. These seem to be becoming more frequent.

Keyboard suddenly quite responding/being recognised. Rebooted.

Keyboard not being recognised after reboot.   Rebooted again after unplugging/replugging mouse and keyboard into USB hub.

Mouse not being recognised.   Rebooted again after unplugging/replugging mouse and keyboard into USB hub.

JUST NOW: Notepad wouldn't create a new note.

Quit.

Then Notepad wouldn't start "Can't access data”.

It displayed that and wouldn’t open

Second time it displayed that —> OK—> It did open.

Subsequently, it won’t open after displaying the message.  *Shrug*

One minute later, with the “Can’t access “ message still present, it opened the Notes file. Click ‘OK’ and the Notes files disappeared.

I reopened. This time it appears to be OK.

====

I am keying this in Textedit. It just displayed ‘Can’t autosave. Not enough space’ or similar - as with those Preview problems.

The ’Notes’ screen grab pic which was above, in the Textedit display disappeared, too.

[I haven't been able to replace the COMMAND-4 screen grab, above, - can't save to clipboard then paste, can't show in finder, it's not on disk, I can't copy it into Preview then here because it never exists. No message but I suspect that something is returning a 'Disk full' status to these processes just as with my earlier problems.]

===

IOW, Generally odd behaviour is happening since Catalina was installed.

[BTW: I have just successfully opened Notes and pasted this Post into a new note - the problem seems to have gone away!!]

Very Odd.

===

I have tried several times to reindex Spotlight because Search is screwy returning many fake results. Nothing seems to happen. How can I tell it's actually reindexing?

SYSTEM REPORT ATTACHED.

Any assistance is much appreciated.

I understand you are experiencing a systemwide inability to save anything to the startup drive, encountering spurious "disk full" reports, and in general your Mac is not working to the point it's practically useless. Please determine if the same problems occur in "Safe Mode": Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac.

Create a Time Machine backup if you have not done so already. To learn how to use Time Machine please read Back up your files with Time Machine on Mac.

That may have been the root cause of all those problems since ill-conceived garbage like it has been known to corrupt disk permissions. Rule 1 of Macs is don't install junk.

Be advised that if you installed "Avast" prior to upgrading macOS it may not be possible to completely uninstall it. In that case you must be prepared to completely erase the Mac and configure it from the ground up—all the more reason to have a backup.
