textedit hangs or freezes

Occurred with Catalina, Big Sur on MacBook Pro 2015 with 16GB.

Opening a new or existing plain text file eventually (10-60min) causes slowing system response or system hang / freeze.

Can occur after reboot.

Occurs more often if new file is not initially saved.

Other programs do not experience same behavior if textedit is closed.

Cursor freezes for both track pad and wireless mouse.

Closing and opening MacBook may still show screen but eventually screen goes blank.

Power reset (10s key press) always works.

Other text editors do not have this problem — Atom, Google Keep, Eclipse, OneNote, &c.

Text files can be completely or partially lost, or, sometimes recovered.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.3

Text edit has had some issues in Big Sur— but limited to restarts and having to force quit and reopen Textedit to regain functionality. Not slowing the system down.

Uninstall all third party apps that are Cleaners/Optimizers/VPN/Anti-Virus

To trouble shoot further you can:

—Try a SafeBoot https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5-15 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache, etc.

Login and test. Reboot as normal and test as caches get rebuilt.

In Safe mode third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled, it removes malware, etc hampering smooth operation, however a reboot will put it back to normal mode.

This test will tell you if third party interference; extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

—Test issue in another user (or guest user) account https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/set-up-other-users-on-your-mac-mtusr001/mac

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.

It mat be simplest to just try re-installing the macOS on top of your existing macOS to sort anomalies—

Have no 3rd party add-ons / plug-ins, AVs. Just updated with latest Big Sur 11.3.1.
Two other user accounts on mac also exhibit this problem randomly.
Almost never use Force Quit since it does 'dirty' close of process(es). Also, may not be able to access menus or keyboard with bad hang.
Thanks for the response.
Can live with it. Noticed others asking about TextEdit since at least 2013.
May just keep using Atom and vim for text files.
BTW, TextEdit loses cursor position when editing RIch Text files.
