Camera not showing up in files app directly connected with usb c cable to iPad Pro

I have a Canon EOS R, when I connect it to my iPad Pro and turn the camera on there is no import dialog and it doesn’t show up in the files app. I can still import using Lightroom but not using the photos or files apps . I do have an SD car reader and that does allow the card to show up in Files. I would like to just use a usb c cable to connect my camera to my iPad and then manually decide if I want to put the images in a folder, Lightroom, or photos.

Is there a setting in Lightroom that I need to turn off? Is the iPad so hobbled that a straightforward connection like this isn’t possible? What am I doing wrong? How can I fix it?

Any advice other than “oh just use Lightroom or the SD card reader” is greatly appreciated.
