GPS/Maps with no cellular connection

Hi! I’m going on a trip where its unlikely my phone will have service. I bought a series 5 watch thinking that GPS would still work without a cellular connection but can’t seem to find out how. Was I mistaken? Is there a way to have a map/guide without any cellular service?

Workout routes not showing in 9.2 (Race Route) In WatchOS 9.2 I’m not seeing routes in the Workout app. When I go to the start of my route, select Outdoor Run and filter on Routes, there are no options. I run the same route all the time and it shows up in Fitness on my iPhone so I know the watch and/or phone is recording the route. I thought it might have something to do with my route not being along a public road. So I just tested by running the same half mile twice on a sidewalk next to a road known to Maps. It measured the 0.5 miles the same within a stride or two so that tells me the GPS reading is consistent. Still when I went back to the start of the route it did not show up in Workouts. No, the GPS feature and built-in Maps app cannot be used for navigation purposes when using the Apple Watch without the paired iPhone and access to data.

You may find that a third-party app meets your needs.

That’s a shame. I thought that since they were sold as “GPS” or “GPS and Cellular” that meant that the GPS was independent. Thanks!
