Text messages disappearing

I got a text message from an unknown number (but it’s my neighbour) and it was in my notification centre but when I opened my phone it was gone, not in the messages app. I’ve tried taking off my passcode (as advised on a previous app) but nothing will get the message back and I need to know what it says. Please help!
