RAM is likely not the major issue here.


About 95 percent of slow 21.5-inch iMac reports here are not due to RAM but rather to the slow mechanical hard drives Apple uses in the entry level iMacs. The base drive in a 2012 iMac 21.5 is rated at only half the transfer speeds for the same iMac model made in 2011.


Because of the need for professional RAM installation and the associated extra costs over the cost of RAM ((between US$140 and $175 for labor and the required resealing kit) it behooves you to look for other ways to get more speed. There is a do-at-home option but we need to make certain the drive is the issue first. To that end, please download Etrecheck from the Mac App Store and run it, and post the results using these instructions:

Be sure to use the Additional Text icon and not the Link Insertion icon whn uploading the report:
