Alert that Disk Space is almost full but there appears to be plenty of space.

I keep getting alerts that I'm almost out of storage, and sometimes iphoto makes me delete some things in order to import any new photos. But when I look at my system preferences and look at the storage it says I have 58GB available. What's going on? Both of these things cannot be true. How can I use the rest of those 58GBs? I attached a photo below of one of the alerts and how much storage I supposedly have. Thanks in advance for your help.

Your screenshot is showing "Available storage". That does not mean that the storage is free. Available storage is used storage, that needs purging. You will see, how much storage is really free, if you launch Disk Utility. You should have at least 20GB of free storage.

For example, my smallest Mac is showing 131.41 GB available in the  menu- About this Mac, but is misleading. Disk Utility is showing that only 46GB are free.

I the system is telling you, that the storage is nearly full, you should try to free storage asap. It is urgent.

Empty the Trash, move large files to an external volume, keep only essential files locally on the Mac.
