Tried this via a HDMI livestream card to USB-C, but it does not show up in in the Media / Cameras folder–only the built in HD webcam appears. Apparently, this is a known limitation with FCPX. But clearly, there must be some way to configure an external camera in hardware/software, otherwise there would be no option in Final Cut.

The camera list is cameras whose media is supported, not for live ingest. Softron has software for live camera into FCP.
Launch Quicktime Player, go to the menu File > New Movie, click on the caret next to the Record Button - does your camera appear as choosable source? If so, try a recording and then import that recording into FCP-X.

Yes, in fact I know it can do that. But for a certain workflow I want it to capture it directly into Final Cut. As I say, it must be possible because they have an available camera list. Thanks.
