Apple Watch questions

I'm thinking of buying an Apple watch but I have 2 questions:

My mobile contract is with Virgin mobile - do they support Apple watch cellular?
If I only buy the GPS version, do I need to also take my iPhone with me to be able to use messaging, WhatsApp etc on the phone? What about Applepay?

Question 1,no virgin don't support the apple watch cellular.

Question 2,Yes you do need to take your phone with you.
