How to free up space in an hard drive

My iMac is showing that there is 221.05Gb out of 499.25 GB available and yet my external hard drive only has 411.35 GB out of 2TB available and I don't understand why .What I would like to do is to free up some space and just use it to store my iTunes library then I can empty the library in my desktop and play music from the hard drive. I also have a number of movie clips in Movies which iCloud will not let me transfer into it so I would have them in the HD as well .Any other files can stay in iCloud including future video I make. Any advice please ? Thanks

I am an now subscribing to Apple music where my iTunes library is repliacted aI shall now buy an external SSD to move my iTunes library into and delete the original one .

I also deleted most of my backups by opening finder scrolling back to particular date then inside "Home" I right clicked and chose the delete all Home back ups option from the date backwards. I now have over 1TB available in it
