Echo showing up after editing Voice memo audio in iMovie.

I have an iMovie project using iPhone and GoPro video footage. I am using a separate audio recorded using a mic into the voice memo app on my MacBook Pro. When I edit the audio to sync with the video clips, various phases of echo show up at the edit points. It is almost as if an audio footprint is created when the audio track is first imported. I tried one method from 2018: Export the edited audio track as AIFF file, then import it into a new iMovie session. That didn't work. Any ideas?

Audio issues can happen when audio is recorded on a different device than the video, as in your case. Exactly what type of audio editing are you attempting? Are you splitting and trimming? Trying to sync? If it's sync, you might try control-clicking on the audio clip and selecting Show Speed Editor from the dropdown menu. That will reveal a speed adjustment slider in the upper right hand corner of the clip. Slide it back and forth slightly to adjust the audio to the video.

To rule out a corrupt preference, try deleting preferences. Open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and select to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Now see if the echo issue is resolved.

Also, you might try using the voiceover feature of iMovie, with the internal mic, to make the audio and see if that makes any difference.
