Hey there! Sorry for the troubles. I think these two articles may help:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT206989

It sounds like there wasn’t a backup done before this happened unfortunately.....those suggestions may help, I believe that error has to with the internet not connecting to a server for one reason or another. Those articles gives some suggestions.

If all else fails, do you have an external hard drive with enough capacity to back up your data? If so you may still be able to save your data before erasing your Mac (Which may be necessary to fix it). Just let me know!

Thank you for your suggestions.

i don’t think not one of them working... I reinstalled again. It was No error and took over Night. Then, shut down as soon as I logged in (took so long to wait). I tried with safe mode start. Didn’t work.

Do you think OS Catalina was too much on my Mac? I have more then 50% empty on HD.

should I reformat ? Start over as new Mac, if it’s working....

😖

Yup! ......Yes you’ll want to re format the external hard drive before reinstalling the OS onto it:

Under the How to erase a disk section:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208496

You’ll want to choose, as in that section Mac OS Extended Journaled and GUID partition scheme, just make sure you select the top level of the external drive after selecting View > Show All Devices, it’ll be ready to have the reinstall done onto it then and be compatible to read/write data from your Mac.

When it’s time to erase the Mac though, if it’s just reinstalling Catalina, I would just choose APFS instead of Mac OS Extended Journaled, (As Catalina already runs on that format). Good luck!

Hello, I tried “reinstalled” in USB (32GB) after formatted. The looks like done for instillation. Then, automatically restarted again. (Updating?? ?)

that was never finish stuck “13minits remaining...” Screen forever. (Overnight didn’t change) 🤔

I guess that not working right?

I may have to try next step which is Erase main HD Now.

i will follow your instructions!

My HD is broken?!?!

I let you know😉

I finished to install OS on USB. Then, I restarted Mac, the screen stopped with “Apple” Renaming 13 minutes forever.

I checked what’s wrong...

I checked all HD with fairest aid and “power”+D. Then, no issue.

I decided to reformat HD (I couldn’t back up anything) anyway, I did. Then, try reinstall OS to clean HD after formatted. I couldn’t... message said “ SMART”.

I think 🤔 my HD is dead?

do you think replacing HD is expensive? I saw may people change HD SSD to HDD.

should I bring to shop to fix it????

I hope you have more suggestions.....😢

thank you

then I tried to install OS to HD. The error happens. HD is not

Hey again! Sorry those suggestions didn’t work out. Did you have an external hard drive you can use to save your data? If so, I’d format the External drive in Disk Utility (as Mac OS Extended Journaled and GUID scheme), Quit Disk Utility then Reinstall Mac OS but choose the external drive as the destination instead of Macintosh HD. Then when it’s finished, it’ll boot up from the external drive where you can either:

select the option to move data from Macintosh to external drive.

OR:

Set up like new, create a new user, the use Finder to select Macintosh HD (Under “Locations”, then open “Users” folder and move your user folder somewhere onto the external hard drive, (Such as downloads). (I’d refrain from signing into your Apple ID during set up, or just make sure you don’t move the original user folder into iCloud Drive (Desktop and Documents), if enabled, as it may use up your iCloud storage, which is why I suggested Downloads.

Once that has transferred, you can shut it down, eject the external drive, boot to recovery mode again with Command R, THEN reformat, (Erase), the main hard drive (Usually Macintosh HD), (Just make sure you select “View > Show all devices” from the top menu, then erase the main hard drive (On top of Macintosh HD, usually AppleSSD or AppleHDD), if installing Catalina again make sure to choose the format APFS and again GUID, then erase).

Once done, you can then reinstall Mac OS onto the main hard drive (Macintosh HD), then set it up as new, (Or select the option to transfer from the external hard drive......I think best to set up as new to avoid further issues), then you can use the Finder to drag and drop data from the external hard drive to your newly re formatted Mac!

Its a lot of work, but if the data is important it’s definitely worth it.

It May also be a good idea to run a hardware test by starting up you Mac holding “D” on the keyboard. Whatever it finds wrong, it’s best to follow these steps to save your data if possible.

Once done, you can reformat the external drive, and set up Time Machine with it to avoid future data loss:

Hope all goes good, cheers!

Hey Mayumi224! Thanks for the update, yes, unfortunately a SMART error means there is an issue with the hard drive that couldn’t be fixed on its own. That would explain why no other steps worked, the hardware was preventing installation from completing. Hope it works out okay! As for a repair, I’m not sure the year of your Mac, but if it’s older than 7 years Apple may not have the parts available to fix it, in which a repair shop may. The cost will depend on an inspection and further diagnosing, all the best!
