The iPhone could not be updated. an unknown error occurred (14)

I cannot update iOS on iPhone 6s. I'm getting the following error: "The iPhone could not be updated. an unknown error occurred (14). Is there any way to update the phone without doing a full factory reset recovery? If not, is there any way to recover the data prior to doing a recovery?

Might as well give up. Apple won’t fix what isn’t broken. Apple will NEVER do anything that would compromise the security of any Apple device. That would be called a “back door”, and if it existed anyone would be able to get data off your phone.

What Apple did do is give you multiple ways to back up your phone and sync your phone to other systems, including automatic daily backups. But they have no way to make you use the tools they gave you.

What got you in trouble in the first place isn’t anything Apple did, it is what you didn’t do: BACK UP your phone.

Your comments are a bit confusing to follow.. but Apple's iOS does not take up an entire phone worth of storage. I am running the latest iOS and my 'System' storage is only 6.71 GB. Even the old 16 GB phones can handle that size. Now there have been some issues with the System and Other categories becoming inflated for unknown reasons. When you have that issue, it can fill up your storage pretty quickly. I'm pretty sure your phone will not download something if it does not have space.

The resolution for the issue above at this point is to backup your device if possible, reset and restore it. So as Lawrence Finch has commented, you still need to have a current/recent backup when you do this. Best to do this regularly and frequently as you never know when you'll need it.

If you are being prompted to buy more than 200 GB of cloud storage, it must be because you have gotten close to filling it up. What are you storing in iCloud? Assuming your new phone is signed into the same Apple ID, if you go to Settings and tap your Apple ID up top, then select iCloud.. it will show you what apps are using iCloud, what space you're taking up and what's still available.

I just want to make sure that you aren't under the impression that just because you have a 256 GB phone, that you automatically need as much iCloud storage.

Regarding the syncing of only syncing certain music.. see this link

Use iTunes to sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with your computer - Apple Support

midway thru there it shows a screenshot of the option where you can sync only checked artists/songs etc. I found that a bit painful to go thru my ~3500 songs, so I've always bought a device large enough to sync my entire 33 GB library. (Of course I then subscribed to Apple Music and I don't really need it all now ha ha)

I'm guessing the music syncing thing isn't as much of a concern now with the large storage capacity of your new phone, but thought I'd point you to it just in case.

The music you said you hadn't backed up.. was it purchased from iTunes? Cause you can just go download all that again.. If the music was ripped from CDs or something, I think you had to have that music on your computer in order to sync it to your phone in the first place.. so you wouldn't be losing anything there would you?

Any update on this. Phone storage full Approx 8000 photos. phone was plugged in overnight. Woke up slow rebooted or attempted. Looped Apple logo purchased $130 with software to help after 20 failed attempts thru iTunes error 14. No back up no iCloud. iPhone XR spent over $1000 on this. My daughters father passed away 12/5/19 all messages and voicemails as well as Live Photo’s stuck in that phone. I’m sick. I will be switching all my phones and my company phones to androids. Not that my $10,000 a year is much to Apple but this is unacceptable. Why isn’t the software set to scan for space or to delete unused files.

So let’s see: Apple gives you two different ways to back up your phone. You didn’t use them. Apple gives you a way to sync your data to iCloud. You didn’t use it. There are at least a dozen ways using 3rd party tools to preserve data from your phone. You didn’t use any of them. And someone this is Apple’s failure? Get real!

Yes, get an Android. But if you don’t back it up either, the same thing will happen.
