iMessage not working on one specific Wi-Fi

iMessage and FaceTime are not working with my home Wi-Fi connection, the same Wi-Fi network is working perfectly fine with all the other apps and safari and even with other devices.

Tried connecting my iPhone to a different Wi-Fi network and everything works perfectly.

Tried resetting the router, restoring the phone to factory defaults, resetting the network settings. Can anyone help?

Custom DNS resolvers are trivial for the Internet Service Provider to override, because DNS packets are plain-text and not encrypted at all. They can't do the same with DNS over VPN because it's encrypted, so you could try that. DNS over VPN is different from a full-on VPN in that it only sends DNS messages through the VPN tunnel instead of all traffic.

Here are two apps from reputable vendors that I've used that let you do this for free:

  • NextDNS, extremely user-friendly privacy policy, can optionally do DNS based ad/tracking/malware blocking as well, has a free quota of 300k queries a month that I find is plenty for personal use
  • Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1 app, with the WARP feature turned off, as that requires a subscription to function sustainably

Maybe the issue isn't related to DNS at all, but this is something that could solve the problem and worth exploring.

I tried them both.

NextDNS wouldn’t make much of a difference. However, Cloudflare’s app did when I connected the VPN!

I still don’t understand why this happens though.

Anyways, thanks so much for your help man! Cheers!

Hi gaurishankarsushil,

Thanks for your post! We understand that FaceTime and iMessage will not function when using your home's Wi-Fi. What exactly happens when you try to use these services on your Wi-Fi? When you restored your device, was the device setup as new, or did you restore from a backup? Make sure you have followed the steps listed in the article below.

If you get an error when trying to activate iMessage or FaceTime

Let us know what you find out!

Take care!

I'm guessing there's a network-level block on some services on that Wi-Fi network, intentional or not.

This is a shot in the dark, but it's free and not too hard, so worth a try:

  1. Settings > Wi-Fi > Select the faulty network
  2. DNS > Configure DNS
  3. Choose Manual
  4. Remove existing DNS servers with the red minus buttons if there are any
  5. Add Server: 8.8.8.8 (this is Google's public DNS resolver)
  6. Add Server: 8.8.4.4 (Google's alternative DNS resolver address)
  7. There should only be two items on the DNS Servers list at this point, 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
  8. Save
  9. Try if it things work now, maybe leave it like this for half an hour or so
  10. If it doesn't work, you can revert to the Automatic setting, like it was before

Using a reputable, paid VPN service would probably fix the problem, it's like $5 a month, but it's overkill for this situation.

Hi guys,

If you’re facing the same problem, please try the following in the below order :

  1. restart / reset your router
  2. try connecting VPN and if that worked for you, PLEASE IGNORE EVERYTHING AND GOTO step 7
  3. upgrade to the lastest iOS version
  4. reset your network settings on your iPhone
  5. backup your data and restore your iPhone to Factory Defaults using iTunes
  6. Check for firmware updates for your modem
  7. Contact your ISP and ask them to change your public IP.

It would work! Thank you!

iMessage and Facetime are both activated successfully. However, a text sent via iMessage would roll back after a few moments saying ‘Message Failed to Send’ or ‘Not delivered’ with the red exclamation.

Also, I am not receiving notifications for any Apps when connected to this specific Wi-Fi network and lately, I found that it takes about two minutes for an app to start downloading from the App store when connected to this network.. However, I’m able to stream YouTube, Netflix without any problems and all my non-apple devices work well with the same Wi-Fi.

Tried connecting my iPhone to another Wi-Fi and everything works perfectly.

Oh btw, I restored and set the iPhone Up as New.

I had actually thought of that before and I tried both Google’s DNS as well as Cloudflare (1.1.1.1). No gain.

However, it works perfectly when connected to a VPN. But as you said, it’s just not worth it.
