Keyboard shortcuts not working in Apple Music app (Mac) after upgrade to Catalina

After I upgraded to Catalina recently, I noticed that hitting Spacebar in the new Apple Music app did NOT pause/restart the current song, but restarted the playing song from the beginning. Also, Return does nothing but make the system beep.

This Apple Support page states clearly that the functions of Spacebar and Return have not changed from iTunes to Apple Music.

I really don't know where to begin in terms of troubleshooting this. Any help would be appreciated.

We understand the keyboard shortcuts aren't working correctly for the Music app on your Mac. We'd be happy to provide information to help you address this.

Check to see if the shortcuts work correctly in safe mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac

If they work correctly in safe mode, try restarting as normal and testing again.
