Upcycling Mid 2010 iMac

Hello fellow Macees-

I am hoping to upcycle and re-use my iMac Mid 2010 (with 3.2 GHz Intel Core i3 Processor with 4 GB Memory) as a second monitor for my new MacBook Air 2017 with a 8GB 2.2GHz DDR3 Memory. I am so out of my element here and would really appreciate some guidance with the needed adapters/cables I need or even if this is possible.

You can still use the 2010 iMac if you install Linux on it. Linux works great with 4GB of RAM. You will have access to current versions of the common web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Vivaldi, etc.) as well as the free open source office suite LibreOffice along with access to lots of other free open source software. Linux Mint is a good option as it is easy to install on a Mac. Even if you don't like Linux, it is a good way to extend the life of an older computer and can be a good for a student or kids.
