I can't connect Apple Watch Series 1 to iPhone XR

my sister gave me her old apple watch, and i was trying to connect it to my iphone xr, but it won’t connect and the option to update the watch came up but it wouldn’t update. would i have to send it in?

Continued Connection Issue My friend gave me her old Apple Watch and unpaired it from her last phone. It keeps saying to complete updates on my phone before I can connect to the Apple Watch but I’m all up to date. I believe the watch needs to update but can’t because I can’t connect to a phone. I’m also not 100% what generation of Apple Watch this is, it’s def not the newest.

Did your sister unpair the watch from her phone?,if not she needs to follow these steps;

Remove activation lock
