What do I do when there is no external-drive icon on the desktop to eject following a backup?
iMac Line (2012 and Later)
Open Disk Utility, and if the disk is displayed, eject from that location.
Also check Finder>Preferences...>General>"Show these items on the desktop"✓External Disks.

Why would eject it? But to answer your question you would use Disk Utility to eject the drive.
