I have just purchased a new Apple remote for my Apple TV box and it will not connect

Hi , I have just purchased a new Apple remote for my Apple TV box and it will not connect. It is recognised as the light on the box flashes but it will not respond to menu etc. Can you please help ?

Well it has to be paired with your Apple TV.
