panic cpu AppleInternal/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/IONVMeFamily/IONVMeFamily-470.100.17/IONVMeController.cpp:5320

I have read previous reviews that indicate that the crash has been caused by software (which would be Sophos). Any recommendations other than uninstalling the Sophos - though my organization expects antivirus software on end user devices.

Without the full kernel panic report it is hard to be completely sure, but Sophos most likely is causing the problems unless the panic is due to a hardware issue (such as the SSD). Is Sophos installed by your organization or can you pick the anti-virus product used on your Mac? If you are allowed to choose an anti-virus product, then see if they will allow you to use MalwareBytes instead of Sophos. If they don't allow you to choose/switch, then you will have to report the Sophos issue to them so they are aware of the problem. In my personal experience of cleaning up client Macs, MalwareBytes has been the only AV solution that works to get rid of the nasties on infected Macs.

If your organization insists on Sophos, then they have to help you fix the issue so your Mac doesn't crash. If this is a personal Mac, then I would suggest asking for a laptop provided by your organization to use for work so you can uninstall Sophos from your personal Mac.

See if your laptop qualifies for this free Apple SSD repair program:

FYI, here is a current list of the publicly acknowledged free repair programs for various Apple products (some products such as your laptop have multiple programs available):

See if you have a panic report (file's ending in .panic).  If you have more than 1, please post a couple as the differences can be very useful:

Look for the Kernel Panic reports at:

Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder -> /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

<http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT200553>

The panic report should have ".panic" in the file name.

You can put the panic report in an "Additional Text" box when you Reply

If, AND ONLY IF, you have difficulty posting via "Additional Text"

then try posting to PasteBin.com, and give us a PasteBin URL link.
