Firmware blocks Recovery mode

A colleague of mind has a MacBook Pro which he bought brand new from Apple a few years ago. He tried to boot into Recovery Mode (Command-R) today but it is asking for a firmware password.

He does not recall ever setting one up (and I imagine Apple wouldn't have done so) so he doesn't know the password.

Is his only option to take it to Apple, prove it's his Mac, and have them reset the firmware password?

.. or is there any way he can reset it himself?

If he doesn't know the password, then taking it to Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider along with valid proof of purchase is the only way to remove the firmware lock.
