Apple TV HDMI on Yamaha AVR volume control

I use a Fire TV Cube, an Apple TV 4K, and an Xfinity Flex. All are connected to a Yamaha AVR which in turn, is connected to my HDTV. (There is also a Blueray player but, it does not come into play so much here.)

Right now, the whole thing is controlled by voice using the Cube. I can switch HDMI inputs by saying Alexa, switch to Apple TV. Back by saying Alexa, Home. The Cube remote also controls volume and mute. But I vastly prefer volume, mute, and navigation with the remote that is for the device I am using.

I do use the Apple TV Siri remote buttons when on the Apple TV device.

Simply because it is in my hand, I wish I could control the Yamaha AVR volume with the volume toggle on the Siri remote. Right now, the command device is the Cube. However, the Apple TV remote does have IR. The Yamaha has IR for volume. Indeed, I can control volume WITH the remote that came with the Yamaha at all times. So, I just want to give the Siri remote the IR code for Yamaha SO I can control the AVR volume when I have that little Siri remote in my hand.

How?

I don't want to loose the control of the Cube. I just want to add IR for Yamaha to the Siri remote for volume control of the AVR when using the Apple TV. Simple. But how? There is no program or enter code to do so. Secret back door to do this?

I figured it out. Albeit, with assist from Apple Care+

Go to Remotes and Devices on Apple TV. Turn Controls TVs and Receivers “off”.

Then go to Volume Control and choose the learn option. But, here is the confusing part!

Put your Siri remote down! Continue the learning part with your main remote (in my case, since Cube controls CEC, I used the Amazon remote but you may use the AVR remote.) So I pressed up volume and down volume on the Cube remote to learn IR on the Apple TV prefs and now the Siri remote, finally, controls volume!

Note: My AVR has no BT but, if it did or if yours does, this learning part might be easier or more automatic. But, since I don't have BT, I dunno. Good luck.

Yes, as in your photo, if I had the Apple TV controlling the receiver, as you do, it works. But, as I wrote, Echo voice and its overall HDMI management is too important for me to give up.

Quite simply, I want the Custom via IR with the Control TVs and Receivers “off”.

If that is “on” then I loose my whole setup.

I just want to control volume (which happens on the AVR) using the Siri remote button when I am using Apple TV but not give HDMI control to Apple TV.

It turns out the advice from Apple Support does not solve the problem. It just goes back to the wrong setting no matter how you do the configuration.

I do not think it is possible to have an AVR or other HDMI device controlling CEC let the Apple Siri Remote at least also control the AVR volume.

There also seems to be no way to remove the “Solved” from the above reply I made! Why not Apple?
