how do i get back the preview of my message in mail!?!

I can no longer preview my messages in mail. they use to show upon a separate window underneath the new email lists when I clicked on a particular email. and they would automatically be marked as read. now I can not resize the subject window.

The preview pane for each message in mail has disappeared and I don't know how to restore it. The text is available but not the content. Please help. The mail I receive only has the text, and not a preview of the contents. How do I get the preview of the email back on the screen automatically, without having to double click on the message to open it?

MAIL LAYOUT Usually whenever I would open the mail app, it would give me three columns, the first (far left) would have the emails id want to access, flagged, inbox, draft buttons - the middle column would show all the inboxes of whatever I pressed on and then the third would be the actual message that I would click on with my cursor. But I mistakenly pressed the wrong button that no longer shows me the message of whatever my cursor is on & what I hit. below is a picture of how id like my screen to look. I want to be able to view my mail messages without having to double click and then my message appear on a different window, Im just not sure where thats at :( pls help the 2nd picture is how my mail currently looks, I just want to be able to view my messages on the far right of the same window.

Mail stopped showing message content on Message Viewer page. only a list of messages Maybe cursor passed over something that re-organized my Message Viewer. Now only see a full page list of messages. to read a message must click on it and open it. Can't see anyway in View or Messages pull down menus any easy way to see content of messages on Viewer, as i have for about 20 years. I probably did it but how?
