I have a MacBook Air 1.8GHz Dual-Core Intel Corei5 with the latest MacOs running (Catalina 10.15.6). I checked the Zoom Support website and I understood that this was sufficient for virtual backgrounds, but I get the warning sign when I try to activate it.

Sorry, I don't know.
Same here! When I use a virtual background, the image covers me up. I have the following specs and it won't work for me
You may not be able to. See the following from Zoom support: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/360043484511-System-requirements-for-Virtual-Background#h_1d44b8c6-0031-4c8a-9300-8c1a722ba057
Which Macbook Air do you have? Virtual Backgrounds only work with i5 and higher
Try to use a green blanket or sheet to act as a background and click on the "I have a green screen" button.
