Airpod double tap does not work consistently

I just bought AirPods generation 2 and the double tap feature does not work consistently. It seems that no matter the way or where I tap, sometimes it works and others it doesn't. Is this a typical issue? What can be done about this?

Hello katelynn115,

We understand that tap gestures on your AirPods are intermittently not working. It's important for new devices to work like you expect them to. We'd like to help you get this resolved.

Are your AirPods connected to an iOS device? If so, go to Setting > Bluetooth, and tap on the little "i" next to your AirPods name. Select the left or right AirPod there and make sure the correct option is selected for what you want to happen when you tap on them. After that, make sure you're tapping on your AirPods in the location shown in the example photo here: Connect and use your AirPods and AirPods Pro. The example photo can be seen in the "Control audio with your AirPods (1st or 2nd generation)" section.

If double-tapping your AirPods still isn't working as expected, try resetting them next. You'll find steps on how to do that here: Reset your AirPods. If the issue persists after a reset, we recommend either reaching out to Apple Support or seeking service at an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
