My Apple watch fails to measure heart rate when I am wearing it

I was wearing my apple watch during the night, In order to track my sleep.

I woke up to notice it failed to measure my heart rate for a couple of hours, as well as the activity app failing to recognise it as an idle hour.

I didn't take it off , nor was I charging it during the night .

What is the problem with it?

Is it defective

NB: I've only had the Apple watch for 7 months.

You may need to clean the sensors on the back.

Make sure that the watch is snug on your wrist. https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT204665

Going by your description it sounds more like it is not snug enough
