Trying to pair them but getting a message that the iPhone needs updating.
iOS has been updated to 12.4.8.
Looks like the phone/watch should be compatible but I’m stuck!
Any help would be much appreciated.

If your phone won't update past ios12 then you must have an iphone 6 not an iphone 6s,and if the watch is running watchOS6 then that needs ios13 in order to pair.
