Ring Tone won't appear on phone

Having trouble getting a custom ring tone onto my phone.

  • The audio file is a 15 second .m4r file.
  • The phone is connected, unlocked, and shows up in iTunes.
  • The audio file shows up in the Tones section of that Device in iTunes.
  • The phone successfully syncs with iTunes. (Other files have come across.)

The .m4r file does not show up in the Ringtone section.

I feel like I'm missing something really simple...

As per the article https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207955

Use a custom ringtone

If you created a custom ringtone in an app, like Garageband, you can sync it to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iTunes for Windows or the Finder on a Mac.

  1. Connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your computer.
  2. On a PC, open iTunes for Windows. On a Mac, open the Finder.
  3. Drag and drop the ringtone to your device.
