Thunderbolt 2 output to Thunderbolt 3 monitor causes continual restart on 2014 Mac mini running MacOS Catalina 10.15.6

I bought the LG Ultrafine 4k monitor through apple, but could not use it with my 2014 Mac mini running MacOS Catalina 10.15.6. I bought the apple Thunderbolt 2 to 3 converter and though the monitor appeared to work, it caused continual restarts. I mean continual -- it was impossible to use the computer at all for more than a few minutes, and in fact the computer would not even shut down. When shut down was initiated it would restart instead.

Switching back to my old monitor resolved this issue.
