Xcode 11.6 causes macOS 10.15.6 to unexpectedly crash on shutdown & restart

There are reports from many users about unexpected kernel panics on macOS 10.15.6 after installing Xcode 11.6 and its simulators for iOS, tvOS and watchOS. The problem occurs during shutdown and reboot causing the OS to freeze and crash unexpectedly with a nice "watchdog timeout" kernel panic.

The issue is extremely frustrating as there isn't a supplemental update to address it.

Update:

It looks like virtual imaging apps such as VirtualBox and VMware Fusion are causing the kernel panic errors.
